CASE STUDY
Assessing Daylight & Thermal Comfort at Modern Houses
The first assignment of Architecture & Environment required me to work in a group of 6, with students from the school of Architecture and schools of other field. We, Group 4, were put under the care of Ar. Edwin Chan Yean Liong, who gave assessments on our assignment progression throughout the semester. During this assignment, which lasted four weeks, I was responsible for researching and collecting data for Daylight Analysis and Thermal Analysis, providing necessary images and infographics, and as group leader, I was in charge of managing and directing the works of my members. This assignment teaches us to identify issues related to daylighting and thermal comfort, to assess the current condition of daylighting contribution and thermal comfort, and to generate ideas in addressing issues on daylight and thermal comfort by applying passive designs at a specific house. During this time, my group and I had to pick a certain type of house and choose an area of the house as the focal point of our assignment. With the chosen space, we are required to analyse the daylight and thermal comfort situation by gathering relevant data, conducting site visit, and recording Lux reading and Temperature reading, and implementing passive design solutions.

Selected Type of House:
Triple Storey Semi-Detached House
Selected Space: Living Room
A2 BOARDS DATA
Our A2 boards comprises of 8 areas, Introduction, Site Condition, Daylight Analysis, Thermal Analysis, Sun Path Diagram, Shadow Diagrams, Wind Analysis and Passive Design Implementations. The Introduction consists of the address, latitude, longitude, floor plans, section and elevations of the house. In the Site Condition section, there are data such as Windrose diagram, Sun-Path diagram, Psychrometric chart and other weather data. The Daylight Analysis contains daylighting(lux) reading while the Thermal Analysis contains thermal comfort(temperature) reading. The Sun Path Diagram and Shadow Diagram consist of 3D renders of sun path diagrams and shadow diagrams respectively. The Wind Analysis showcase floor plan and section of the house with wind direction analysis. Lastly, the Passive Design Implementations comprises of 4 passive design solutions.
